Emotional Regulation
What Is Emotional Regulation?
Emotional regulation refers to our ability to understand, manage and respond to emotions in a healthy and balanced way. Everyone experiences difficult emotions, but emotional regulation helps us cope with frustration, anxiety, sadness, disappointment and stress without becoming overwhelmed.
Children and adults who experience emotional regulation difficulties may struggle with emotional outbursts, anger, anxiety, impulsive reactions or feeling overwhelmed by everyday situations. Emotional regulation challenges are commonly associated with ADHD, autism, anxiety disorders, neurodiversity and periods of increased stress.
